Bright as You

Harrod & Funck were a duo of songwriters--Jason Harrod and Brian Funck (ironically, in the pictures above and below, Brian is on the left and Jason is on the right). Although they are no longer together, their music lives on as a tribute to their unique sound and style. The two men performed together for several years after hearing each other play at an open mic event in Chicago around 1990. Both were students at Wheaton College and eventually ended up playing together. In 1998, they took a year off, and it was during this time that Brian decided he was becoming too burned out from touring and trying to break into the pop-dominated mainstream of the American audience. There was quite a bit of excitement surrounding Harrod & Funck, and, indeed, there still is. They were even compared to such great duos as Simon and Garfunkel, but, even while growing ever more popular on the Boston folk scene, pressures mounted and ended their eight year career together. Brian currently resides in Hollywood, CA with his wife Sara and son Graham. He has done editing for a documentary, America's Heart and Soul, and TV shows such as American Hot Rod, American Chopper, Dirty Jobs, and others. Live

Despite their breakup, a dedicated audience remains. Together, Harrod & Funck put out three albums. The first two are studio recordings: (1) Dreams of the Color Blind; (2) Harrod and Funck; while their third, more recent CD, called Live, is a live performance of the duo at Calvin College. I highly recommend Live--probably because it is the first one I ever heard. I later acquired Dreams of the Color Blind and it didn't disappointed me. The lyrics and harmonies are all there just as I expected them to be. Live is still my favorite, but Dreams of the Color Blind is growing on me! And, finally, I came to own my very own copy of the self-titled album. As with Dreams of the Color Blind, I was met with the familiar way Harrod & Funck deliver their unique songs. There are certain songs that I like better than others. Generally speaking, I tend not to like the tracks in which drums have been added as much as others, but that might have something to do with the fact a well-played acoustic guitar needs no enhancing in my opinion. Anyway, the important thing is that it is certainly worthy of anyone's CD collection. You really need to hear these songs.

Once Brian left, a difficult decision remained for Jason, but after much deliberation, he found that the advantages outweighed the disadvantages and decided to press on on his own. He has already put out his debut album entitled Living In Skin (2000). Jason and Brian remain friends, and Brian's voice can be heard singing harmomy on Jason's solo album (which is simply brilliant, by the way). Bethany (my sister) and I went to see him play in New Jersey back in October 2001. It turned out to be one of the best, most memorable weekends of my life. Also, you can find seven different mp3s in all from these four albums at their respective sites. But, really, you have to buy the CDs to truly experience their music. Trust me, you won't regret it.

I was first moved by the music of Harrod & Funck during the summer of 2001. My sister had begun listening to the Live album on the recommendation of a friend. When I heard a few of their songs, I really didn't think much of them except for the fact that I liked the style. When I really began to listen to them, however, I was drawn in by uniquely fresh lyrics, and rich, clean harmonies. Harrod & Funck evoke feeling and emotion like no other preceding duo. If you are looking for a new, clean take on the acoustic singer/songwriter genre, then this music is for you.
